ABSTRACT

Objective:

In this study; we aimed to determine the the effectiveness of infection control measures in patients undergoing hemodialysis for chronic renal failure by analyzing the HBsAg, anti-HBs, anti-HCV and anti-HIV serologic indicators retrospectively.

Materials and Methods:

HBsAg, anti-HBs, anti-HCV and anti-HIV parameters of 96 patients receiving hemodialysis treatment in 2012 were analysed with the ADVIA Centaur XP Immunoassay System by CLIA method.

Results:

In this study; there was no HBsAg and anti-HIV positive patients. All the patients were regularly and fully vaccinated for hepatitis B but 10 patients (10.4%) had anti-HBs antibody level under 10 mIU/mL. 4 patients (4.1%) were positive for anti-HCV. Statistically significant difference was detected in anti-HCV positivity for hemodialysis duration, gender, history of dental treatment and the presence of hepatitis in the family.

Conclusion:

In conclusion; appropriate infection control measures in hemodialysis patients, immunization and education of patients and health care workers can reduce the possibility of transmission of infectious agents.
